You get seven HDMI inputs, and all of them support 4K HDR . Three of them boast some level of HDMI 2.1 compliance, and the HDMI output supports eARC. As of October 2021, though, we're still waiting for these updates. Anthem MRX 1140 is basically an MRX 740 with 4 additional amp channels, an upgraded toroidal power supply for improved performance, and a few more goodies. The Yamaha R-N303 is much more expensive than the Sony STR-DH190, but all of our panelists considered its extra cost justified. Not only did it sound subtly better in our listening tests, but it also includes useful features that less-expensive receivers lack, such as Wi-Fi streaming and digital audio inputs.

One reason we picked the VSX-935 over some other models in this price category is how MCAAC can fine-tune the phase of the subwoofer to blend it better with your main speakers. Plus the power amplifier section of the VSX-935 is beefy with a gutsy, dynamic sound. Marantz takes its know-how in audio performance and packs it all into a slim AV receiver with the Marantz NR1711. This compact receiver can slip into tight quarters thanks to its constrained proportions – it's just 4.1 inches tall. You won't miss out on much in terms of performance by going small, though.
To use this feature, you download Yamaha’s MusicCast iOS or Android app and then connect the receiver to your Wi-Fi network. While I found the MusicCast app considerably less friendly and more complicated to set up than a Sonos network, the AirPlay and Google Cast functionality worked easily. And because those technologies are compatible with a wider variety of streaming services, I expect most R-N303 owners will rely more on those technologies than on MusicCast. We considered receivers priced under $400 that, ideally, have both Bluetooth support and a phono input to connect a turntable. If you already own Wi-Fi speakers that use a certain platform , you may want to look for a receiver that features the same streaming technology so that all the devices will work well together. The receiver is also a multi-channel amplifier capable of powering a wide range of speaker configurations, from stereo and traditional 5.1 and 7.1 surround systems, up to the latest 11 channel systems with multiple pairs of height channels. One odd engineering decision was to opt to place the RJ45 connector for the Trinnov mic on the rear of the receiver. For convenience, and in the interest of extending the reach of the cable, it would be better served on the front-panel of the unit. Also, at this price point and with the proliferation of HD camcorders, a front-panel HDMI input would be a welcome addition. Sonically, the one minor negative I experienced was a bit of boominess in the subwoofer with the Trinnov engaged.
“Small Advents,” as they were called, were deliberately designed to be 4-ohm speakers. Advent wanted the Smaller Advent to have essentially the same excellent bass response and deep extension (-3dB in the mid-40’s Hz) as the Large Advent. In order to achieve this, they needed a woofer with more mass (they mass-loaded the center of the woofer, under the dustcap), for a lower free-air resonance to offset the smaller volume of air in its compact cabinet. It worked just fine, but at a severe penalty in sensitivity—the Small Advent needed a lot of power to drive to reasonably loud levels. To offset that, Advent made it a 4-ohm speaker, so it would draw more power out of its companion receiver and “seem” just as loud for any given volume control setting as the bigger Large Advent, which was an 8-ohm speaker.

Again, I came away impressed with the Trinnov system, preferring its imaging and much more accurate and immersive soundfield. I had assumed that, depending on the source material, I'd be switching the room correction on and off but that wasn't the case as it always provided a more satisfying listening experience when engaged.
The amazing thing was how similar the 7 sounded to the 3a, except for the deepest bass and extreme highs. My speakers were AR-2ax’s (10-in 3-ways), the ones sitting vertically directly on the bench. Lying horizontally on top of them are my cousin’s AR-3a’s (12-in 3-ways), which he had loaned me for a few weeks. Sitting on top of the 3a’s are my sister’s AR-7’s (8-in 2-ways), which had just arrived by mail order and I hadn’t yet brought them over to her house to set them up. There were record stores everywhere and in areas with strong concentrations of college-aged kids—like Boston, NY, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc.—it seemed like there was a stereo store on every street corner. Going in, you can guess the quality of YouTube and other web video. About 2 minutes into the pilot episode of 30 Rock, our screen froze. We restarted the video three times, only to have the picture go black in the same spot. We switched over to the 1995 movie Clueless and then to Hulu.
